I started reading Journey To The West in university and fell in love with the deep visual descriptions throughout the story. I referenced photos of Rhesus Macaques for his model and Tang Dynasty helmets. The faces on the helmet depict the Eight Immortals, alluding to the Daoist themes present in the popular Chinese epic. Many of the details, such as his distended earlobes and diadem, were drawn from the source material.
